Field Diaries.

Real farm problems, written up as they happened: the problem, what we saw on the farm, the diagnosis and what was done. Where the result is not written up yet, we say so. Growers are not named.

A noon message: the plants are dying

Three photos on WhatsApp, no history, and a request for a spray that day. Wilt at the base has several causes and each needs a different fix, so we asked the farm to run three checks on pulled plants first.

Same-day answer: Fusarium wilt. A visit two days later confirmed it and counted 4,980 plants: 4,340 unaffected, 350 mild, 290 past recovery. The 290 came out and the rest were treated.

Result after the 7-day review: not written up yet.

Yield down from about 4 kg a plant to 2

A cucumber grower had lost half the harvest per plant. Soil tests and a farm review found two problems feeding each other: a weak root zone and unstable fertigation. More spray or fertiliser would have fixed neither.

We set a 30-day plan: roots first, one change at a time, each change measured before the next.

Result after 30 days: not written up yet.

The same gap, caught before planting

Another house on the same farm, before transplant. The soil test found phosphorus and potassium below detection and a pH of 7.36. Its capacity to hold nutrients was high, so this was an unfertilised plot, not a worn-out one.

In the other house this gap was found after the crop was under stress. Here it could be corrected first, for a few days' delay to planting, with the soil retested before transplant.

First crop on this house: not written up yet.
